What is Alateen?
Alateen meetings are for young people aged 11 to 19 who have been affected by someone else’s drinking, whether they are in your life or not. It is a free, peer based, weekly meeting where teens run the meeting with the guidance of adult Al-Anon members who have been through a certification process. Alateen members meet other teens who understand their problems, fears, and worries. This is not a religious program and there are no dues required for membership.
Alateen meetings are available on a walk-in basis. There are no member lists kept and attendance is not tracked. Teens choose to share their names and are not required to share anything they aren’t ready to talk about yet.
Like all twelve step recovery meetings, Alateen is funded by member donations by observing the Seventh Tradition, “Every group ought to be self-supporting, declining outside contributions.” As such, donations are strictly voluntary.
It is the teen members’ choice to share in meetings. It is not required but it can help to understand others your age suffer from the effects of another person’s alcoholism or addiction. Sharing can help others support you, too. Members are available before and after the meeting for questions.
